Setting the level to -44 decibels equals silence. Setting the level below zero will decrease the volume. Increasing it too far will cause it to distort. The Envelopes tab and the Envelope Editor manage the clips envelopes, which are used to automate or modulate the effects, mixer, and clip or MIDI controls.
Increasing the level above zero amplifies the sound. NOTE: It is important to remember that 0dB means normal volume. The audio level (volume) can be keyframed to fade the volume up, or down, or to adjust the overall level.
Opening the audio controls reveals the audio levels and waveform. If you "open" a sound layer by clicking the arrow to the left of its name you will notice that instead of containing transforms the layer contains audio controls. AfterEffects : Controlling the Volume previous
